House fire
A room can reach flashover in 3 to 5 minutes, and smoke can fill a home in 2 to 3. Whether your family gets out is decided before the first truck arrives.
Volunteer departments
Volunteers have to get to the station before the truck can leave, which adds several minutes, more at night or in bad weather. The estimate above allows for this.
The gap that matters
Responders take over when they arrive. The minutes before that are up to your family, and a practiced plan is what fills them.
Each time runs from your 911 call to the first fire engine at your door: dispatch, turnout and the drive.
Dispatch. NFPA 1710 sets 64 seconds for fire call processing; we use about 1 minute.
Turnout. NFPA 1710 sets 80 seconds for fire. Departments often miss this, so we use 2 minutes.
Drive. Google Maps driving time from the station to your address, without traffic.
Volunteer departments. We add 5 minutes for volunteers to reach the station. NFPA 1720 sets total response targets of 9 minutes in urban areas, 10 suburban and 14 rural.
